Below the Main Sequence

There are numerous stars on the M67 color-magnitude diagram that are below the main sequence.

  1. Do you think that any of these stars are white dwarfs? How might you tell?

  2. If they are not white dwarf stars, they may be stars that are not members of the cluster but are at a different distance. Use the calibrated diagram with absolute magnitudes that you found by shifting to match the main sequence of the Hipparcos catalog. Identify stars with about the same color as the Sun, but less luminosity. Find the lowest luminosity star you can with that color. How much more distant would that star be if it is behind the cluster rather than in it?
