Towards a Science of Broadening Participation: Myths and Realities

Dr. Patricia Rankin

Many attempts have been made over the last few decades to encourage women and members of populations that are generally under-represented in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields to pursue careers in these disciplines. While progress has been made it has generally been slow and variable. There is growing recognition that to be effective in reaching the goal of a diverse workforce, interventions need to be assessed and their effects understood. This colloquium will discuss some of the common reasons given for the lack of women in the sciences and what research studies indicate to be the real issues women face. There are significant advantages to taking a team approach to solving problems when that team can draw upon a diverse set of skills. This presentation aims to help people understand how to be effective in recruiting and retaining scientists and engineers.
