First discovered in 2007, fast radio bursts (FRBs) are very strong, very short bursts of radio emission from currently unknown origins. As more of them have been found with varying characteristics, the question of what astrophysical phenomena are causing these emissions has baffled astronomers. Are they from some kind of new high-energy astrophysical source? Is it aliens? We’ll explore the discovery of FRBs and and what we think we know about the origins of this mysterious radio emission.
