National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Fellowships were established in 1952 for Americans for graduate study in science, mathematics
and engineering, tenable worldwide. About 2000 students win them per year, either just prior to graduation at their BS institutions, or
early in their studies at their graduate institutions.  Since their inception, over 500,000 students have applied for them.
Applications are judged on transcripts, a research proposal, letters of reference and
GRE general and subject scores.

NASA Space Science Fellowships
are a similar, younger program for study related to various NASA missions.

Awards are made in the spring.
