UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE ACADEMIC HALL OF FAME
RHODES/MARSHALL/GATES SCHOLARS FROM U. LOUISVILLE
Rhodes Scholarships,
established in 1902 by an endowment from Cecil Rhodes, are
postgraduate
awards supporting exceptional students from around the world to
study at the University of
Oxford, in any field. The Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most
prestigious
international scholarship programme in the world, which aims to
nurture public-spirited leaders for the world's future.
A total of 7000 have been awarded, and 4000 Rhodes Scholar alumni
are currently alive.
Marshall Scholarships,
established in 1954, are a thank-you from the United Kingdom for the
Marshall Aid Program after WW II. They are for American
citizens for 2-3 years of study at any United Kingdom
university. Currently, about 40 awards are made per year from
over 1000 applications,
and there are about 1800 living alumni.
The Gates Cambridge
Scholarship program was established in October 2000 by a
donation
of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the
University of Cambridge;
this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university.
Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries
outside the UK to pursue
a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the
University of Cambridge.
There are about 90 awards per year from roughly 4500 applicants, and
40% of the awards go to American students.
Rhodes, Marshall and Gates Scholarships are among the most
competitive scholarships in the world.
Awards are made in the spring.
